Bmw Group Has Opened Electric Vehicle And Battery Manufacturing Facilities In South Carolina


BMW Group has opened expanded vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities in Spartanburg and Woodruff, South Carolina. The company, which assembles BMW vehicles and produces BMW X models, invested $1.7 billion in its South Carolina operations and said its business activities in the U.S. support more than 120,000 jobs nationwide.

The investment included the expansion of Plant Spartanburg and the construction of Plant Woodruff, creating the foundation for assembling fully electric BMW vehicles in South Carolina. BMW confirmed that the BMW iX5 will be the first fully electric BMW assembled in the United States, with production scheduled to begin at Plant Spartanburg before the end of 2026.

Plant Spartanburg assembled 412,799 BMW X models in 2025, marking the seventh time the facility exceeded 400,000 units of annual production. Since 1994, the plant has assembled more than 7.3 million BMW vehicles, with approximately half of its current production exported to nearly 120 countries.

The new BMW X5 assembled at Plant Spartanburg will become the first vehicle offered with five drivetrain technologies, including internal combustion, battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, diesel, and soon, fuel cell electric powered by hydrogen. Plant Spartanburg will also become the first facility in BMW Group’s global production network capable of assembling a single vehicle with five different drivetrain technologies on one assembly line.

BMW said the facilities implement the principles of its BMW iFACTORY production concept through smart automation, end-to-end data integration and virtual planning. The plants use digital twins and 3D virtual simulations to optimize processes, while artificial intelligence supports self-correcting robotics, vision-based quality controls, and the AIQX platform, which uses sensors and camera systems to automate quality processes and provide real-time feedback to employees.

Plant Spartanburg is also deploying humanoid robots from Figure AI to support workers in physically demanding and repetitive tasks. At Plant Woodruff, the company is implementing a “Cell-to-Pack” manufacturing approach that assembles battery cells directly into housings without cell coating and cell module production processes.

In a recent quote, Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president & CEO, BMW Manufacturing Co., said, “From highly efficient combustion engines and plug-in hybrid systems to battery-electric and future hydrogen-powered vehicles, Plant Spartanburg will be able to assemble a broad range of drivetrain technologies for customers in the U.S. and around the world.”

The U.S. will have more than 950 clean energy manufacturing facilities by 2030: report


A report from the American Clean Power Association (ACP) examines the breadth and impact of the clean energy manufacturing sector in the United States.

The report, called America Builds Power: The State of Clean Energy Manufacturing in 2026, covers 825 currently-active manufacturing facilities in all 50 states. The researchers identified 50,000 direct workers at the facilities, who make average salaries 35% greater than the national average. 

In addition to direct employment, the report states 50,000 jobs have been created to support upstream activities related to clean energy manufacturing activity, alongside nearly 107,000 jobs generated based on household spending by the original workers (induced jobs). 

Added together, the ACP says the total effective employment impact of clean energy manufacturing is 215,700 jobs, with 106,100 accounted for by solar manufacturing, 53,100 from energy storage manufacturing and 56,500 from wind.

In addition to employment related to operation and economic activity from the manufacturing facilities, the report outlines the impact of facility construction. The ACP finds that construction of new or expanded clean energy manufacturing facilities in 2025 supported 207,000 jobs and led to over $20 billion in increased GDP.

The top states by total GDP from clean energy component manufacturing include Texas, where much of the newest solar module capacity has been built, Michigan and Illinois, in which LFP battery cell manufacturing is king, Ohio, home of First Solar’s largest thin-film production facilities, and Georgia, where Qcells operates a vertically-integrated ingot-to-module manufacturing hub.

Looking toward the future

By 2030, the ACP expects the number of jobs due to solar manufacturing to grow by more than 63,000, with annual solar module production capability ramping from 63 GW at the end of 2025 to over 85 GW by the end of the decade, with solar cell production capacity rising to about half that of modules.

The numbers for future energy storage manufacturing-related jobs are even higher, expected to grow by over 91,000 as battery module manufacturing capacity doubles from 75 to more than 150 GWh, and domestic LFP cell capacity jumps to over 130 GWh by 2030. Similarly huge increases are expected in the domestic production of anode and cathode materials and lithium processing.

Increases in the production capacity of and employment related to wind energy manufacturing are projected to increase by small amounts, with an estimated 2,400 new jobs expected through 2030. The relatively small predicted increases are due to current domestic production capacity already exceeding demand, with only slow growth expected in that demand.

Indiana Expansion Strengthens Supply Chain

John Deere recently broke ground on its new distribution center near Hebron, Indiana, a location chosen for its central position and strong workforce. The facility is designed to enhance nationwide supply chain operations, ensuring faster and more reliable delivery of equipment and parts across multiple customer segments.

The Indiana project is expected to create approximately 150 jobs and support John Deere customers across agriculture, turf, construction, forestry, and mining markets.

In North Carolina, John Deere will invest $70 million to construct a new excavator factory at its Kernersville campus. The facility will leverage advanced manufacturing technologies to produce next-generation excavators for the construction market and will take over production previously based in Japan.

The new factory is expected to employ more than 150 people and play a key role in meeting growing equipment demand while reinforcing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The Indiana distribution centre will support parts and equipment delivery across John Deere’s US operations and is expected to employ around 150 people. The company said the site was selected for its central location and access to a skilled workforce, complementing its long-established North American Parts Distribution Center in Milan, Illinois, which employs approximately 1,200 people.
