U.S. Manufacturing PMI Hits 55.5% in October, Tenth Month of Growth – News and Statistics
Nov 3, 2026
U.S. manufacturing activity expanded for a tenth consecutive month in October, supported by faster production and steady growth in new factory orders, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The institute reported that its Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index came in at 55.5 percent for the month, a gain of 1.0 percentage point from September.
The reading follows a ten-month contraction and, in the institute’s assessment, points to growth across the broader U.S. economy for a 24th straight month. Its economic modeling associates an October PMI of 55.5 percent with a 2.7 percent annualized rise in real gross domestic product.

Susan Spence, chair of the institute’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said manufacturing stayed in expansion territory during the month. She noted that four of the five subindexes making up the PMI grew faster than in September, while employment growth slowed by 0.3 percentage point.
The Production Index rose 2.3 percentage points to 59.0 percent from 56.7 percent in September, the highest level since November 2021 and a 12th consecutive month of expansion. The New Orders Index reached 55.5 percent, up 0.2 percentage point from September, for a tenth month of growth. The Backlog of Orders Index slipped 1.8 percentage points to 54.6 percent but remained in expansion for a tenth month.
Survey respondents in high-tech and defense markets described strong demand alongside severe lead-time pressure. One machinery-sector executive reported rapid growth in semiconductor and government and defense work, with lead times and prices climbing and some delays reminiscent of the Covid-19 period. A manager in miscellaneous manufacturing said commodities used by data centers remain constrained in both supply and pricing.
Demand for capital goods outside those areas showed hesitation. A computer and electronic products executive cited uncertainty in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and China, along with questions over research funding, as factors shaping customer purchasing behavior.
Employment expanded for a fourth consecutive month, though at a slightly slower pace. The Employment Index registered 52.4 percent, down 0.3 percentage point from September, and respondents favored hiring over reducing headcount by a ratio of 1.8 to 1. Eight industries reported employment growth, including four of the six largest sectors.
Raw materials inventories returned to expansion after contracting in September. The Inventories Index rose 2.8 percentage points to 51.4 percent, with seven industries expanding inventories.
Cost pressures remained a concern even as price inflation decelerated. The Prices Index registered 75.2 percent, down 2.7 percentage points from September, while still indicating a 25th consecutive month of higher raw material prices. Spence attributed the reading to higher steel and aluminum prices, tariffs on many imported goods, and rising petroleum-based products tied to the Middle East conflict.

Supply chain bottlenecks worsened slightly. The Supplier Deliveries Index edged up 0.1 percentage point to 59.1 percent, marking an 11th consecutive month of slower delivery performance, with five of the six largest manufacturing industries reporting delays.
Respondents said tariffs and trade policies continued to complicate planning. A primary metals respondent cited material shortages, high fuel costs and persistent uncertainty, and said Canadian tariffs continue to hurt steel. A fabricated metal products executive said policies from Washington weigh on business conditions and that Canadian tariffs damage small U.S. businesses selling into that market.
The institute also reported that 6 percent of manufacturing GDP contracted in October, up from 2 percent in September, and that the share of sector GDP in strong contraction rose to 6 percent from 2 percent. Spence described the share of sector GDP at or below 45 percent as a useful gauge of overall manufacturing weakness.
